Participating
in The National Society of Leadership and Success has taught
me many things. I have learned the power of goal
setting through the use of Networking Groups. In the
past, I would set a goal after listening to a
speaker. I would leave the presentation ready to
change the world, but by the next day I had either
forgotten or lost focus on "my" goal. The Society
has taught me how to set realistic goals and with
the help of my peers, I have been able to get ideas
from their input and have friends who help remind me
to stay focused. Our Networking Group has
developed a strong bond and I now feel obligated to
accomplish my goals not only for myself, but also
because I promised my peers that I would do my best!
The Society has also helped me discover what I want.
I have always been confident that I can accomplish
whatever I set my mind to. For the first time in my
life, I wasn't sure what I wanted. I will graduate
this May with a Bachelor's in Communication with
emphasis in Public Relations and an Associate's
degree in Women's Studies. I was offered a Graduate
Assistantship to continue at Purdue Calumet for my
Masters Degree in Communication. I did not know what
to do. I almost wanted someone to tell me what I
should do so I could set my goal on that objective.
The speakers and my peers have helped me discover
what it is I really want. This is something I could
not have accomplished without the help of my advisor
and peers! I am now confident that Graduate
School is the right choice for me and I am thankful
I have the Society members who helped me figure that
out. The Society members are always very helpful in
giving me feedback. Many members were making the
same decisions themselves and others were just
beginning graduate school. I decided begin graduate
school and am very confident with my decision! I
accomplished many short-term and am progressing
towards long-term goals that, with The Society, have
helped me to stay focused as I am coming to the end
of my undergraduate career. I am very thankful that
I have had the opportunity to experience this
intense format of goal setting and feeling of
accomplishment when I succeed!
My leadership role with The Society has helped me
grow to be a better leader in other student
organizations, volunteer groups, and in my work role
as a student worker. Collaboration and teamwork
have become a leadership philosophy for me. I truly
believe that if everyone in the team has a vested
part in the process, everyone will strive to achieve
to make the team successful. This is apparent in the
many events and activities our Society has
accomplished together. I am optimistic to believe
that I had a role in creating this team, but without
everyone's input and creativity, our group would not
have thrived!
Sincerely,

Kristin Harkin
